June 28, 2014 // Alisa + Mark
Alisa Shirley and Mark Henderson knew each other then. The two grew up together in Idaho, and Mark even hung out with Alisa’s little brother, Blake. “Mark is two years younger than me,” Alisa says. “I look younger, though.” Sixteen years later, after bumping into each other during the Thanksgiving holiday break, “then” became now. “Neither of us knew where the relationship would go. There were a lot of differences in style and personality,” Alisa says. “He liked big trucks, country music and cowboy boots. I preferred indie rock and ‘dressed like a hippie,’ per his words. But we never stopped talking to each other. And look at us now — married with a baby!” But we’re getting ahead of ourselves. Before you can look at Alisa and Mark now, you must look at their beyond beautiful wedding last June. Alisa had less than three months to plan her wedding, so she hired her friend, Rachel, to put together the perfect day. “I was in the process of moving to Idaho, and I had just found out I was expecting a baby. Aren’t the three most stressful events in life moving, getting married and having a baby?” Despite the stress, Alisa knew what she wanted: an outdoor wedding that was simple, relaxed and tasteful. “I wanted soft, natural colors: pinks, peaches, greens, golds, creams — nothing too glamorous or fancy,” she says. “What’s funny is my husband likes glamorous and fancy. But he kept telling me, ‘Do what you want.'” In the end, the day was what they both wanted: a celebration of what was then, what is now, and what was to come.
